Aside a body suit, I need to cut out fur for a couple of husky tails, pack a sandal pattern (HOPING the vinyl arrives before MP), a friend's paws to move a snap over and fix one pad, a fox tail. I think that will keep me busy for the duration of my stay.

Stuff left to do (I like to be organized):
    (Home)
    *Prep projects.
*Ink and scan MFF bag design.
    *Scan Anime Cat's badge set.
*Make a shopping list for food items.

-Edmund's case (checked, minus the head which goes with projects)
    -Projects (on board)
    -Sewing machine (on board)
-Art supplies, bathroom supplies, and misc. (on board, unless asked to check)

    (Errand)
*Print my full size, Rob Shepherd and Anime Cats badges.
*Get an XL blank shirt and fabric marker.

    Getting Sick
I think I'm coming down with a something. I came home and slept for three hours and now am going to bed. I was thinking allergies, but the zyrtec, it does nothing! So, stuck some Zicam up my nose and will try to have a quiet tomorrow.

    Blogathon
Reminder: I'm blogging for Doctors Without Borders a week from Saturday -- 48 posts in 24 hours to help provide medical care to some of the most threatened people in the world -- people in areas ravaged by war and the desperately poor. Anything that you can pledge is appreciated -- you can make a pledge here.

    "Skipper Dan"
This is an original (not a parody) song by Weird Al Yankovic. The song style itself reminds me of They Might Be Giants somewhat.

    Skipper Dan

I believe these were the same folks behind They Might Be Giant's, "Damn Good Times," video.

If anyone knows or can find out the studio or folks who made both videos, that would be very awesome.

That's my contribution to things should be maybe a little more like a musical and possibly the reason why we should be thankful they are not.

I'm trying not to think too much about stuff really just now because it'll just get me down, I haven't got anything really to do or any kind of plans for anything short, mid or even long term which is ... really depressing in a way.

    Meh.

Gonna go sleep now and dream of Dr Who/Star Trek: The Next Generation cross overs or something.

    Ukrainians
Every July the Ukrainian church has their Ukrainian Festival basically in our backyard. We like to go and eat Ukrainian food, and last night we got to see some spontaneous Ukrainian folkdancing done by kids. This is just awesome. (By "kids" I mean mostly teenagers, with some younger kids.) It almost makes me wish I'd been raised in an ethnic church. I mean, I love the church I grew up in, great place, great people, but how cool would it have been to have been raised in a city big enough that different ethnic groups had their own places? Of course, that's falling increasingly by the wayside today anyway. And maybe this is a good thing, but maybe it also contributes to seeing white people as Not Ethnic and everybody else as Ethnic.

I can totally hear the Ukrainians partying through the open kitchen window. It's pretty awesome.

    Boozing It Up
I've been drinking rum with lime and lots of seltzer water lately. Basically rum fizzes. It's good, and a step outside the ordinary for me -- I normally don't drink a lot of rum drinks. But this is low-alcohol, tasty, sparkly, and fun. And then I was reading food porn Bon Appetit and found a whole article about fizzes, and now I want to drink them all summer long.

    Dinner
Since grocery shopping is not on my list of things to do today, we're having pasta with some sort of smoked-salmon/dill/cream sauce. And broccoli. I HAVE SPOKEN.

    Power Failures
Apparently LJ's topic-of-the-day is power failures? My most memorable one is obviously the Northeast Blackout of 2003, in August, when pretty close to the entire Northeast lost power due to someone doing something wrong somewhere around Lake Erie, or so they claimed. At first everyone thought it was terrorists. I got to hear differently on my car radio while navigating down streets where No Traffic Signals Were Working on my way to the supermarket to find something we could have for dinner that didn't require cooking, since we didn't have a grill at that point. I came home with the fixings for a shrimp and spinach salad, which was pretty good under the circumstances.

    Food
So when [info]journalismgirl and I were on our jaunt to Nice we were at one point put in a room full of perfume, champagne, and pissaladière, this fabulous Niçoise onion tart stuff. She was a bit more restrained than I, but I had to be dragged away from that fantastic onion stuff. Needless to say, I am a little psyched to see Julia Child's recipe in this month's Bon Appetit and I may have to give it a try. I will sell it to Matthew as "kind of like a flammkuchen, but without the quark."

    Aaa
A meme I got from [info]ka_crow. She gave me an A, so here's 10 things I like that start with A, plus a brief explanation for each one. If you respond to this message, I will give you a letter to do this in your own LJ, not in the comment section with.

"A" by Barenaked Ladies -- This fun BNL song about a dysfunctional relationship from the guy's point of view reads like a Sesame Street parody: "A is for angry, which is what you are at me / A is for adult, which is what Ill never be."

Andy Partridge -- One of the founding members of the band XTC, his songwriting talent is amazing. As far as I'm concerned, he can do no wrong, musically.

Anderson, Laurie -- A singer/performance artist who started out in the '70s and became famous in the '80s, for stage performances that involved weird dances, projected images and words, early use of digital technology, electronically altered voices and clever experimental gizmos such as a suit with synth drum pads sewn into various places, and a violin with a tape playback head on the bridge and a length of recording tape on the bow.

anthropomorphics -- Yup, yup, furries. Animal characters what talk atcha just like them humans. Fun stuff.

alligators -- Alligators are awesome. I don't think I'd like "Really Rosie" as much as I do if it weren't for the fact that one of the kids hanging out on the stoop is, for no particular reason, an anthropomorphic alligator.

art -- I like to draw, though I don't do so nearly as much as I'd like to, which these days is mainly because of my own laziness.

Anthrocon -- I like furry conventions in general. Anthrocon is the one that starts with A. It's also the one I just got back from (with a rather severe case of con crud, ugh...)

Animaniacs -- Tiny Toons was fun. But then Animaniacs came along, played around with the medium of cartoons in hilarious ways and really grabbed my attention! Plus it really got me going on the internet, as I made friends with a bunch of other A! fans (as the show's looong title was abbreviated on alt.tv.animaniacs), first in that newsgroup, then on IRC.

advanced sudoku techniques -- I've been learning a variety of techniques for solving difficult sudoku puzzles. X-wing, XY-wing, XYZ-wing, swordfish, turbot fish, jellyfish, Gordonian rectangles, Franciscan rectangles... I have these and more at my command!

Astroworld -- This theme park, later officially known as Six Flags Astroworld, was my favorite place to go when I was a kid. It was two miles away from my house, which I considered walking distance at the time (now that I have a car, the definition of that phrase has shrunk considerably!) It had all sorts of fun roller coasters, such as the Dexter Freebish Electric Roller Ride (later named "Excalibur" when the County Fair section of the park was remodeled as Nottingham Village), the Texas Cyclone, and the Greezed Lightnin'. Next door to Astroworld was Waterworld, which was a great way to beat the Houston summer heat, with water slides, a wave pool, and other stuff. Sadly, they've both shut down and been completely dismantled in recent years.

Stuff That I'm Pretty Sure Is Not True
Sometimes I worry that I'm one of those people for whom cilantro tastes like soap... but I like the taste anyway.

    OMIGOSH
Our TV has been on the steady decline toward "just don't work no more" -- the top is all stretched out, and the bottom of the screen is all compressed, so if you watch, say, a person standing up, their head is about half the height of the body supported by little tiny legs, so everyone looks like they have some kind of congenital condition. So we had a plan, which was that someday we would go to Amsterdam and take a TV from the house there and we'd use that until we move.

Well, that plan just got derailed.

Our downstairs neighbors got a new TV and gave us their old one in exchange for Matthew helping them with setting up the new one and some other electronic assistance. So now we have some sort of a Dell flat-panel TV type product, not perfect (there are a few darker spots around the edges of the screen), but it functions! And makes people look like they're supposed to.

    Working in Oneonta
When the drive back and forth gets tedious, I can think "I'm getting $0.50 for every mile!" The student seems to be a good guy, and he has a mom who's definitely involved, which is on balance probably a good thing.

I'm going to go read a chapter or two of a Wodehouse novel now.

Don't mess with Randy Beaman's Pal
I'm surprised I didn't make the connection until Ruegger pointed it out (I've been only skimming things online lately, spending too much time on the Wii or with Linda and watching Torchwood...).

One time, OK see, one time Randy Beaman's friend Colin, who was the son of one of the writers of Animaniacs, was made into a caricature and recorded lots of stories about Randy Beaman, and eventually Colin grew up and joined the Army and now he's fighting in Afghanistan.

    'K bye.

    Late night sketching.
I honestly hate coming up with ideas. It's why I love requests. Probably will end up redoing this one for the 3rd time.

Lots and lots and lots of AC reports. I think I maybe made one. Then again, I I'm pretty small and shy.

Tomorrow's going to be interesting. I get to play with a duct tape dummy, unpack some things just to repack others. going to try to hang out with Chris, though we're not sure what to do yet.

We also have a comfy couch and a now repaired futon. We're not sure what to do with the futon, particularly since it feels nice to actually sit on it now.

I may have an option of working / attending Furfright. If I can go, are there any locals heading head? Jason, do you need a carpool buddy?

    Textbooks
One thing that I've looked at quite a bit in the past few years, as I've been teaching more courses online, is the e-textbook. Obviously college textbooks are mad crazy expensive -- I don't think any of us disputes that, yesno? Even if you've been out of school for a while or never been, you can remember it as a major expense, and right now a softcover statistics text can run over $120.

On the other hand, an electronic copy of the book -- available online for typically (from what I've seen) about 180 days runs more like $70. There are downsides -- for instance, any copyrighted material seems to get stripped out, so you have a psych text using a comic strip as an example in the text and the e-reader can't see that strip. And... well, if it were me, I'd shell out for the physical book, because I'm not especially comfortable with reading large amounts of text online or taking notes from the computer screen. 'Cause I'm old.

(Sidenote: I wonder what technology toys like the Kindle will wind up doing with this)

In the past I've offered students the choice -- get the e-book or get the hard copy, put both options in my syllabus, and let them make the decision. With this online homework program that my students will be using this fall, though, they get the e-book automatically. (They have an option of getting the hard copy for, I believe, an additional $45). My concerns are threefold -- first, will students learn as effectively from an electronic textbook? Second, will the electronic book be missing any critical content that's in the hard copy book? (Probably not, for a stats course, but yet I wonder.) And third, is it right for me to make a choice that presents the e-book as a default rather than as a choice of equal options, or am I being too colored by my own preferences for physical books? (And of course, as a side note, what can I do about the bookstore? I'd better get on that next week.)

    The Online Thing
I showed my officemate the online assignment site that I had mentioned here previously. She was pretty impressed, which helped sell me on it. It's really a pretty cool system, and the amount of feedback that students get is outstanding. So there's another thing on my list of things to do. I still have to convince myself that this is embracing the ways in which technology can improve the learning experience for my students, rather than letting me cop-out of grading frequent assignments.

    Musical Note
Listening to Europe's "The Final Countdown" makes everything more exciting. Even dissertation writing. I may have to put this on continuous repeat, kind of like I did with Smooth Criminal during my comprehensive exams.

    Teaching
I'm waiting for a TOEFL student. Waiting, waiting, waiting. He's not very late yet, just about five minutes, but we'll see what happens. And tomorrow I have my first meeting with my SAT student. And I should start putting things together for my stats classes.

Ooo, he was an hour late! That was... fun. Not.

    Anniversary
I got an early anniversary present from my husband! Because he LOVES me. He gave me Jeeves and Wooster. How cool is that?

    Teaching Redux
I think I've decided to go with the online assignment thing. It just seems to have too many benefits for the students. Now to work out how to integrate it into the class... but really I'd rather take a nap and then go back to the diss. Or take some jewelry pictures. Something, anyway.

    Albany
My dysfunctional state Senate has decided to actually pass some laws or something! Apparently Espada, who isn't exactly a nice person, has returned to the Democratic caucus. Now maybe they can pass some legislation or something.

I think I'm going to skip it.
My high school reunion is coming up. I got an official invite via classmates.com this morning.

I was told about it back in June. The same person who told me about said instead of attending, him and other locals were going to a bar instead. When I asked him a few weeks ago if he wanted to hang out if I came up north he said he wasn't sure if he'd be around or not.

So, unless I have a major reason to go back to "that place," I really don't want to hit up north. I think the most I might set foot on at this time is New York City.

I didn't come back with con crud from AC. Instead, I have a minor infection in an annoying spot (I'll spare everyone details) which I picked up medicine for yesterday afternoon, and there's a few bruses from where I think came from wrestling with a friend over the weekend. Other than that, my throat feels fine, and I slept 10.5 hours last night.

    Song Lyrics
In the spring of 1315 there began an era of unpredictable weather
It did not lift until 1851. You remember 1816 as the year without a summer.
June 1816: a sudden snowstorm blankets all the countryside
So Mary Shelley had to stay inside and she wrote Frankenstein
Oh, 1816 was the year without a summer.

So this may be a cool, wet summer... without a single day to tempt me into blowing off my work and going to the lake... but it's not nearly as bad as that year was.

    Shoes
Last night I decided that, since it had stopped raining, I was going to give my silver stilletos a test run before this wedding. So I put them on and headed to the car and got on the highway headed downtown... and SHAZAM! it started pouring. Like crawling along at 40 mph pouring. Thunder, lightning, fleeing wildlife, the whole nine yards. By the time I made it to the parking garage State Street looked like a small river. So I gritted my teeth, rolled up my jeans, and waded across. Luckily, immersion doesn't seem to have hurt the shoes any... and I've got the victorious feeling of wearing them and not sliding off of them all night, not even when they were completely soaked. (Team name: "I wanna pop a coup in Honduras.")

And then we came home and watched an episode of Freakazoid. I won't say its name.

    Chocolate
The Weg has Vosges bars at $2 off. I can never justify them to myself for $6, but for $4 I managed to. Just this once, maybe.

    Dissertation
Digging further into my GD today. DIG DIG DIG.

    Boozing It Up
I've noticed that we seem to be sliding into a habit of fortified wines in this household: Matthew enjoys an evening glass of Port, and I've taken to sipping on a dry Sherry before fixing dinner some nights. Nobody our age drinks these anymore, amirite? Apparently this is just another way in which we are eccentric, or retro. Or maybe we are secretly living in Britain in, like, 1930.
